  • Indianized stuff Apr 27, 2013

The place is pretty cramped and the the so called Mexican food is mostly Indianized. Their Chicken Fajitas and Sizzlers are good. But their Burritos contains mostly beans. So if you are not a beans fan this place is definitely not recommended. Considering the Dearth of Mexican places in the city, this is worth a try once but I would not keep going back again considering the prices.

  • Well it said Mexican on the sign May 13, 2011

That was about where the Mexican experience ended.

We stopped by to celebrate Cinco De Mayo. It looked sort of like Mexican food sitting on the plate, but that was about it. The flavors and use of ingredients was completely wrong. It was mostly Chinese flavored with not enough fresh chilis and WAY too much sugar in everything. It was like they looked at a picture and tried to make what they thought it would taste like.

I have spent the last 17 years living in Texas and Mexico. I know of what I speak. My dinner companion had spent about the same time living in New Mexico,

  • Good food, mediocre ambience Apr 09, 2011

Have been going to Don Pepe's on Cathedral Road for a few years now. In its previous decor avatar, it was a fun place and mexican in theme. So the makeover about a year or so ago to a characterless place is rather flabbergasting.

As vegetarians, our regular choices are the veg fiesta platter, mexiskins, chimichangas, quesaddilas and fajitas. The food is consistently very good and very similar to an American TexMex taste. The salsa is excellent. Guacamole is often not available but whenever it has been available that has been excellent too.

This has become a regular "go-to"

  • Hola Mexicano Sep 14, 2010

Well, for starters, this is not your usual Restaurant. So one should not expect the same. Located above Hot Breads as an extension, Don Pepe serves some of the most lip smacking, calorie filling meal you could possibly have.

From an hospitality perspective, the Host and the waiters can leave one with a bad taste. Most of them are stiff faced and have an air of no interest whilst you make up your mind through the variety of south american dishes listed. Patience here is the key and with a little effort, the waiter does talk.

To most, the names of the dishes are very new. They serve

  • whats mexican Feb 24, 2010

With more and more "speciality" restaurants opening all over the city, one has to assume that the food is "authentic" because there is no other benchmark for the same food, unless there are other restaurants of the same genre in the city. With Don Pepe's Mexican fiesta establishment, one has to hope that this is authentic.

The experience is though FAR from it. The waiters seriosly need an attitude change, and the place is so cramped that there was JUST enough space to squeeze out of the table without disturbing the neighbors meal. It reminded me of the scene from "Valentines day" where

  • Really? bad! Oct 13, 2009

I totally agree with the last review. The decor is really poor, looks like you are in a bakery...kind of. The food is far from being good not to say...quite horrible, there is no space.I wonder why you would go there more than once.

  • Nightmare Sep 07, 2009

Location: Above the hotbreads at gopalapuram
Ambience: Pathetic, with an kitchen, service area and eatery jampacked, highly cramped and also crowded, impossible to get up from the seat without pulling out the table cloth. Hardly the size of 300 sq feet. crowds are just typically indian boisterous and uncouthly

Food; Indianised version of mexican food, totally tasteless.

Price; Highly overpriced be prepared to shed a minimum of 1000 for two people on a pathetic fare

Would not recommend it to anyone.

  • My most favourite! May 18, 2009

I've always been a fan of Don Pepe for more than 3 years and I do keep frequenting this place every now and then.I don't know if there are many mexican restaurants in the city, but Don Pepe wins all the way!!!But the sad part is, the rates have been slightly increased after their renovation at the cathedral road branch!!! Otherwise, the food is super..the nachos, quesadillas...uummm the best starters i've ever had. And i make sure i order my fav chicken fajitas & burrittos!!!Their salsa is lip smacking too...most of the time, my stomache is so full that i skip the desserts..but when i do have their... read more

  • cold paneer in tortillas Mar 24, 2008

This place is plain OK. Can go once since you don have much Mexican places in Chennai. But if you have really tasted Mexican food you ll know this is nothing close to it. Completely Indianised served cold. The margarita is mocktail n was kinda ok tasted more like icecream. The quesadilla only had the name! Even after it was reheated after my request to the manager, the cheese tasted dry. The fajita was ok but the paneer stuffin makes it so indian that it loses the purpose of visitng there. If you so scared to start a cuisine that ur nto sure of to have success you start just another indian restaura... read more

  • Mexican, supposedly Jan 14, 2008

Not authentic, too Indian-ized.. Sizzlers _look_ tempting but apart from that, not something to brag about. Easy on the pocket, thats the only plus.
