Thattukadai Fest - Great Concept...Poor Service :(

We've been to the Thattukadai Festival a couple of years ago, and enjoyed it immensely...
And so, last Thursday, we decided to go for it. Connemara is a great place for a relaxed evening out with the family... what with the history and greenery right in the heart of Anna Salai. As we walked, an NRI Baraath that was happening there, provided the right ambience for the rural feast.
The food stalls were creatively placed, fashioned as road-side eateries - parotta stall, Idli Kadai, Biriyani stall, Juice shop...all with a touch of the yesteryears, complete with MGR cinema posters et al. A jasmine-scented Chennai evening complete with the loud beat of the accompaniment to Tamil folk dances.
But whoever thought of that shoddy costume for the waiters, had got it all wrong. Dressed in gaudy lungis and equally loud, flashy shirts, they seemed to have shed all their hospitality and training along with their trousers!
The welcome drink was supposed to be tender coconut water, which arrived just before the dessert. The starters were tasty, but took a long, long time to arrive. Most of the items on the menu like the Dosai, Idli etc, were not even mentioned and we remember ordering an Omlette that never came!!!
The Sura Puttu was so lack-lusture, and the brain fry was too peppery. But the Chicken Biriyani was tasty, and went well with the Chicken Fry from the Jet Li Fast Food stall.
Desert too was an equally neglected affair...with no mention of the ice cream - or the fruit served in frugal proportions. And ever heard of a Tamil meal that's complete without the traditional betel leaf? Well, there were no traces of a Pan or aftermint here!!!
But overall, the food at Thattukadai was authentic (more than lip-smacking), though a bit on the spicy side (but that's how Tamil street food is). And it was a pleasant evening on the whole... though no amount of chit-chat and small talk could make up for the poor service - considering the hefty price tag!
But the Raintree Thattukadai festival did drive home a point: If it's tasty, authentic Tamil street food that you want, the best so far were the Food Stalls at Chennai Sangamam, last January - that would win hands-down, anyday!!!
