Most romantic place I've been to in Chennai!

the moment me and my friends stepped into the place fell in love head over heels with the ambiance and feel of the place... loved every little bit of the open air garden with candle lit stone tables(though it makes a hell lot more difficult to read the menu!) , thatched roof huts, and soft lighting from beautiful lamps ... and not to mention there were a lot of cute foreign kids scampering all over the place...
only complaint was we were in a bit of a hurry and so could not enjoy to the max.. but since we told we were in a hurry the waiters did their best in making sure our food reached us asap!!
the food was superb.. pizza had the normally talkative group down to communicating in grunts and munches... and black and white mousse had us purring!
only thing is make sure you go with plenty of cash since it's gonna rip your wallet apart... but it was worth it !!

Dog Friendly and Italian to boot!

I am a little biased towards Bella Ciao as it is one of the very very few places in Chennai where I can take my puppy. They also have dogs which again makes me biased in their favour. The place is beautiful, open air tables with mellow lighting and a play area for the kids (or dogs) and a cute little tree house. There are a few cement seating tables and benches under thatch huts and few normal tables. There is an old but cute watchman at the door who will greet you exuberantly.

The service is nice, but sometimes a little too slow. The live music bands are more entertainment of the funny kind rather than the musical kind, but the past few times I have been there, there was not trace of a band.

Now coming to the drinks, there are the usual mocktails and juices and coffee (they make a mean espresso). On and off they serve wine too. Now when you ask them what wine their snooty answer would be french, for those who dont know about wine and are willing to pay 1500 bucks for it, the label does say made in france. But there is a catch, it is table wine (the lowest grade of french wine which is not even allowed to be called wine.) But its french and since my puppy is allowed to terrorize a few waiters, i dont make too much of a fuss.

Coming to the main criteria, the food, its italian and most of the dishes are great and kinda authentic. Stick to the ones that are good and you will have a great meal, worth every penny. My choices are the batter fried calamari, the soups are good and the pizza is the best in Chennai, No doubt!
The grilled chops are also very good and so is the lasagna. Be vary of some pasta's, they can be too bland but the gnocchi and ravioli are good. So is the pesto.

Overall a great place to slowly eat and chatter away.

PS: They are closed on Tuesdays.

Pseudo Italian food

All the good reviews about this place, led us to try the Italian fare at this beach side restaurant. It was a disaster from the word go. The food priced astronomically dampens appetites and has a only resemblence to physical characteristics of this wonderful cuisine. The taste is a different issue altogether. Wide variety of dishes were sampled with eager expectations only to discover a strain of consistent culinary incompetency. The "who-cares-this-is-the-best-italian-food-and-this-is-how-we-make-it-here" attitude of the owners and the waiters comes free with your wallet tearing bill. The great Italian masters will cringe at this preparation. Avoidable at all costs.

Authentic Italian hangout with great pizzas

There are 2 Bella Ciaos in Chennai - this one and the other one opposite The Park. If you plan to eat at Bella Ciao, then I'd recommend this one which is by the beach.

The place is run by Italian chefs and it definitely serves authentic Italian. The cheese and mushroom pizza here is what I really dig.

Also, since its in an open area and by the beach, the weather is pleasant. Nice place to catch up with a bunch of friends over a lazy evening. We were surprised to see two Italian girls (kids) running to our table and giving us all a bunch of rose petals in our palms. It had a feel-good factor going for it but it's been a while since I went there.

Romantically Italian

Probably the only proper Italian restaurant in Chennai and has the romance that comes with every Italian restaurant attached to it. On the beach, open air, Italian food and awesome wine, everything to fall in love with. Best place to take your date and sip on some champagne. It is a bit expensive but completely worth the experience. Don forget to take your flowers!
