Shri Devi Park Hotel, Near Soma Sunder Ground, 1, Hanumantha Street, T. Nagar, T.Nagar, Chennai

Poor

Mediocrity - thy name is BBQ Nation

Everyone keeps screaming about the concept and how good it is, but the concept is just as good as the service and the food.
When the place opened, I had nothing to complain of, but in just a few weeks, things seem to have drastically turned off in BBQ Nation.
Reservations are recommended even on week nights here and that is exactly what we did on a friend's birthday, reserved a table for ten and showed up about ten minutes late, thankfully, the table had been held back for us.
We settled in and they started with the starters - vegetarian separately and non-veg for the others.
If you are a vegetarian at BBQ, you are in the wrong place, it is obviously meant for the meat lovers, but what happens when you discover some hair in the chicken?
That is exactly what happened and on complaining, the waiter actually tried arguing with us on possible replacement of all the chicken starters for that grill - he thought if he just pulled out the hair and left the meat, it would be fine!
A fine kettle it was there and they had to be told that we expected them to replace all of it!
The food was not great, definitely very very passable and the buffet dinner again was just mediocre.
Mediocrity could be their middle name in fact, but the charges they lay on are atrocious.
Recommended only if you want to try a different theme and are too hungry to notice the rubbery taste of the food served.

15 Old No 9, Khader Nawaz Khan Road, Nungambakkam, Chennai

Good

Not that bad

When I first entered the Mocha here, I was a bit astounded, it was clean! Yes, I can hear the harrumphs and the throats of other Chennai burrpers clearing and the brick bats being readied, but compared to the Bandra Mocha (ever been there around 9 PM on saturday), this place is clean.
Yes, it has the usual problems that all Mochas (with the exception of the Koramangala one) have and that is the worst service in the history of cafes in India. It also seems to have fallen into a stage of deterioration (as pointed out in sansmerci's review), but it still is better compared to Amethyst as far as I am concerned.
The food is still my favourite in Chennai and my staples here include their Chai Latte and the Ferrero-Rocher Shake for drinks, their maggi noodles with cheese and cream and the mediterranean panino for bites and their chocolate avalanche is the ultimate dessert I have tasted anywhere - ever.
And did I mention that I love their music - but they are getting rather loud these days :(

The Residency Towers, 115 Sir Thyagaraya Road, T.Nagar, Chennai

Poor

Miss it if you can

I heard so much about this place that I went here the first night I relocated to Chennai from Mumbai to meet a gang of friends.
Unfortunately, while they do live up to their reputation of letting in stags, they have the concept of two floors here - the lower one for those with partners and the upper one for the stags.
So, if you are a woman with more than two men, you are automatically sent up to the first floor, which is an issue since most men seem to end up at this pub.
Imagine fighting your way through inebiriated men most of the time every time you want to move somewhere, pathetic, yes.
Dancing on the ground floor is not that great a deal either when you look up above and see all the men oggling hanging onto the bannisters and throwing leers. It would be better if they just let everyone mingle instead, maybe then there would be a reduction in the number of desperate men who try to pour down their drinks on the dancers (yes, they do that too) who are on the ground floor below them.
I would rather just go to Zaras or Distil instead.

North Boag Road, T Nagar, T.Nagar, Chennai

Excellent

A true pub in the English tradition

10 Downing Street is a bit of a surprise when you first enter (if you can push yourself through the crowds thronging) - this is the lighting.
A more dim place I have yet to see at Chennai, but you almost forgive them the lack of lighting when you look at the decor - it's original in that they have not tried to "indianise" an essentially English pub theme. I really cannot comment on their cocktails - I have never had them here, but I can comment on their ladies' night - unlike the other places, here all drinks had by the ladies are on the house (every Wednesday) and you can see that they are quite popular with the ladies then (free drinks limited to certain brands of course).
I tried the Tandoori Platter as well as some corn and they were pretty good and music is excellent.
For those who want to do a pub lunch in Chennai, these people are open at 11 AM, so go ahead and indulge yourselves. They are the closest thing you would get to a real pub in Chennai as per the English definition of the word "pub".
Unfortunately, their parking leaves a lot to be desired and I had to get the manager to intervene and help us each time we were there.

The Park, 601 Anna Salai, Anna Salai, Anna Road HO, Chennai

Excellent

Clear Winner

The best bartender in Chennai roosts here and when I say the best, I mean the darn best.
The bar is well stocked and you have a number of drinks available here which are not stocked by any other bar in the city.
The only good Mojito I have had so far here was at this place and the music is something that can be swung to.
Exorbitantly expensive, the bar boasts of certain well-known patrons who first hit this place before moving onto Pasha for dancing a gig or two.
The service was great and here's a little tip for single women who want to have a drink or two when in Chennai - you can safely sit at this place and know that you will not be troubled by any men through your visit, the bouncers there keep an eye out and the crowd is uber-chic, which means you will not find yourself the unwilling recipient of cliched pick up lines.
